PARISH COUNCIL NOMINEES

Over the last six months, the Nomination Committee and Parish Council have prayerfully discerned and interviewed four candidates to be nominated for three positions on the Parish Council.  The election will take place at the AGM on November 3rd.  Over the coming weeks please prayerfully consider whom the Lord has called to this role in the upcoming season of our church.

If you have any questions or concerns about these nominees, please don't hesitate to contact Fr. Stephen (stephen@redeemeranglican.ca) or our People's Warden, James Syratt (peopleswarden@redeemeranglican.ca).

Below you can read a message from each of our nominees to help you get to know them.

STEVE FUNK

Hello, I am Steve Funk.  Together with my wife Pauline, and sons Kevin and Travis, we have been attending Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church since 2007.  During that time, my service at the church has included the following:

  • Several interspersed board terms since 2012, with the last one ending in 2023;
  • Leading church membership classes for approximately 7 years until 2014/2015;
  • Leading various community groups during the same period;
  • Counselling individuals and couples on personal finances and stewardship since the early 2010’s;
  • Teaching on personal finances and stewardship in Corpus Christi School of Discipleship for three years.

Aside from the board terms mentioned above, the remaining areas of service were all done together with my wife.

I am a recently retired CPA and my most current business experience was as a partner in a national accounting firm where I was leader of the firm’s Agriculture Risk Management division nationally for 24 years up to 2023.  Since retirement, I have continued to provide ongoing mentoring to the same firm’s Agriculture Risk Management specialists on contract.  I also serve as Adjunct Faculty in the Business Administration (Agriculture) program at Briercrest College and Seminary.

JEREMY KOOT

My name is Jeremy Koot, and I’ve been a member of Christ the Redeemer since 2005. I’m married to Chanel, and we have four wonderful children. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving in various areas at the church, including leading a young marrieds group, working as a sound technician, and serving on the parish council for over 10 years. Currently, I’m involved with the building discernment committee and lead a community group.

Professionally, I work as a commercial real estate broker, and I’m passionate about helping business owners and individuals build their dreams. I believe in the vision of our church and look forward to contributing to building that vision for the future.

CATHY MAXWELL

Dear Parish Council and Congregation,

Thank you for the opportunity to share with you why I allowed my name to stand for Christ the Redeemer Parish Council.

I have been a member of Christ the Redeemer Church  (CTR) for the past five years, and during this time, I’ve found a strong connection with the congregation and my faith. One of the most meaningful moments in my life was when I, alongside other family members, was baptized and confirmed after completing the Corpus classes. This experience truly solidified my faith and commitment to the church.

Over the years, I have served in various capacities at Christ The Redeemer, including Reader, the kitchen lead for events like the Epiphany Feast, Maundy Thursday Soup Suppers, kick-off breakfasts and other potluck gatherings. Bringing our congregation together to share meals is something I hold dear, as it fosters a sense of community.

I was also honoured to be part of the team tasked with rewriting the Church Constitution and Bylaws, which marked an important new chapter for CTR. This opportunity allowed me to give back to the church and apply some of the skills I use daily professionally.

As CEO of the Lethbridge Real Estate Board, I work closely with a board of directors, navigating governance, bylaws, and serving members. These experiences align well with the responsibilities of the Parish Council. I also hold the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation, which has equipped me with solid governance, leadership, finance and association management competencies.  Additionally, I have served on several other boards which have provided me a myriad of experiences which I  can lean on if I'm selected.

While my professional experience practically fits, what drives me most is my desire to serve the Lord and this congregation. I understand the dedication it takes to serve on a board and am prepared to take on this commitment. It would be an honour to serve you as a  Parish Council member.

Thank you for considering me as a candidate.

Regards,

Cathy Maxwell
