All of creation has a way of life. A rhythm with which it is meant to live. Humans are no different. In fact, if we're honest with ourselves, we can recognize that we all follow a rule of life. The only question is whose rule you are following.
When we use the word “rule,” whether we like it or not, it usually makes us think of something that takes away our freedoms or limits us. Although understandable, that isn’t what is meant in the Christian context. Instead, it comes from a Latin word, regula, which literally means “trellis.” The word describes a wooden frame built to encourage the growth of vines. A trellis brings about safety and flourishing for a vine. That is what a Rule of Life is meant to do for us. John 15:1-17 gives us a picture of the vine (Jesus) and the branches (us). We are meant to abide in Him, to flourish and “bear much fruit” (v. 8).
Our time together in this course will not teach you “the only way to grow,” but will be about helping you choose which direction we are growing by intentionally building a Rule that flows within the rhythm of creation. We will spend our time considering which practices to adapt to personally form a Rule of Life modelled after the way of God, while learning from one another.
